WI Partners Resource Night – 2.15.2012 – Gaining Compliance

During the winter months of November 2011 through March 2012,
Partners In Excellence is presenting a series of sessions on Behavior,
specifically designed for parents and caregivers of children with special needs.

Please join us on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 for our next presentation:

“Gaining Compliance”

Trying to get children with autism spectrum disorders to join you in an activity or to complete a task that needs to be accomplished can sometimes be very challenging.  Children with these disorders often may not want to comply with your requests and may not feel the urgency that you do as a parent or caregiver to get the task done.  In addition, sometimes when a caregiver tries to press a child to comply, emotional outbursts or disruptive, challenging behaviors can erupt, often making the whole experience feel unsuccessful or even disastrous.

One of the most important strategies when working with children with autism spectrum disorders is to learn how to proactively set up both yourself and the child to successfully gain the child’s compliance and to minimize the likelihood that challenging behaviors will occur.  Simple strategies can be very powerful in shaping the child’s behavior so that both child and parent are more likely to succeed.

This workshop will teach participants the basic concepts of proactively working to capture children’s motivation and gain their compliance with tasks and activities.  Participants will also learn strategies that can help gain a child’s compliance with requests being made and even increase the likelihood of active or ongoing participation in the tasks.  In addition, this presentation offers a didactic component as well as experiential exercises where parents and caregivers may tailor their learning to their own specific family situations.  There is also a take-home exercise for those who wish to further practice these skills and receive additional feedback from the trainer.

We invite you to come early from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to enjoy refreshments
while mingling with parents, Partners’ staff, and other professionals
during our Mini Vendor Fair where local vendors will be available
to discuss their products/services.
